I got the dm3z laptop from hp and i have this little problem. I have to hold the fn button to use the f keys. otherwise if i just press the f keys by itself it changes the brightness, volume, pause play, and ect. Is there any way for me to use the F keys without having to hold the fn button?

For this particular laptop, you need to go into the BIOS to make the function keys act as normal function keys. I'm not sure exactly how it worded in the BIOS, but you're looking for something that allows you to disable the function key lock (action key).

I did a little further investigating for you. This should help. The following link will allow you to download HP's dm3z user manual.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=4034608&

From there, select the PC User Guide and download the PDF file. Next, go to page 27 to read about the action keys and continue to page 70 to read about how to disable them.
