Help, please - I deleted ntdll.dll

Hi.

I unfortunately deleted ntdll.dll, using KillBox.
Well, I'm not actually sure if it got deleted or not, because it is still in WINDOWS\system32, but Windows is not working properly anymore.

Windows XP still boots, but Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work at all, and I cannot open My Computer, or any program for that matter, unless I open it while the applications that are set to start with the boot process are still loading. After that, clicking on stuff just makes the gross Windows Error noise or doesn't do anything.

It can't be something really bad, I hope. KillBox even saved a backup of the file (I think) in a folder on the C drive. But, like I said, ntdll.dll is still to be found in the system32 folder and causing Windows even more problems than before.

I don't have System Restore enabled, and running Registry Mechanic fixed nothing. I don't know if doing a Repair Windows Installation or using the Recovery Console, from the CD, will help at all.

Well, apparently, the Windows installation will work properly if I wait about 20-30 minutes after Windows starts. I can then do everything I was able to do before - if I just wait that long. At that time, when I am finally available to use Ctrl+Alt+Del, I see some programs (all named like 241D3.exe.exe) disappearing quickly from Task Manager.
Something is clearly wrong. Not much, but still. Can it be fixed?
P.S. Oh, by the way, this computer is not connected to the Internet, so virus/spyware is pretty much out of the question. I caused the problem, by messing with the dll. And I did that because Windows Explorer would say it needed to restart when surfing folder where a lot of thumbnail images needed to be generated, and would always point to ntdll.dll as the cause of its crash.

 

google the file.there are several sites that advertised free downloads of dll files.not sure how well they work tho.unfortunately this file is a necessary one.

 

Oh, no, I still have the file. Yes. I can still see it in WINDOWS\system32.

But I just keep getting these errors.

Now, every time I log on or off, or reboot, etc., I see these error boxes:
24A87.exe.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly...
And then, if I click on 'OK', I get error from 24A96.exe.exe, then 24B07.exe.exe, and so on, and so on, for like 20 minutes. After that, it works.

Thanks, anyway, but I'm not going to pay money without knowing exactly what I'm paying for, ever. And I can reinstall Windows by myself, for free. It's just a huge hassle to do a reinstall, so that's why I posted here, looking for some expert advice.

things that throw "missing_whatever.exe.exe" errors are usually malware related.

something YOU have installed has contained some bad thing.. probably an icon file exploit of some kind and it's payload has been removed but slowdoze is still trying to find it because the registry has it listed as an application to load at startup..

you WILL have to google your solution.

 

You know what? I didn't Google this, but I found the solution. (Google throws in so many useless search results, that I just don't use it anymore. I'd rather Wikipedia stuff than Google it. Are you all Google agents, or something? Stop promoting this!)

Anyway, what I did was I searched for those .exes that used to start, in My Computer. And I found them all in Documents and Settings\...\Startup. I deleted them (and the hidden .bats) and... no more problems!

I believe KillBox put those .exes there to try to delete the .dll. But they were unsuccessful and, for some reason, multiplied like hell.

Did you even read my previous posts? I'm not connected to the Internet! (Oh, and I scan every file that gets transported over to this computer. On another computer, not on this one. I'm very careful, really!)

Just one ntdll.dll, in system32.
(I disabled System Restore because the HDD with the OS has just 15 GB.)

But, anyway, I have solved the problem, now. Thank you very much, though.

I had System Restore enabled, in Windows ME, years ago, and when finally a problem arose with that operating system, it could do absolutely nothing useful. (Besides, it uses at minimum 200 or 300 MB.)

You know, I never thought much of the System Restore feature, to be completely honest. Has it helped you at any time?

 

same did away with system no restore a while ago used ghost instead however there is macrium reflect it's free or there's in no particular order & no money required in links below,easiest method is create one time image files saves on hard drive space,also look at installing ummm ok back in a bit.. system protect from the makers of spyware terminator,nothing can be deleted when it's on,permission only when you say so,good for when un-installing apps you can read just what is being deleted yeah anyway worth a mention

How is it possible to clone a HD to another one?
I have Windows XP, on this PC. Is that a feature of Windows 7, or would it also work on XP?
