was given a Sony vaio vgn laptop for free had a cracked screen.
I took the screen out until i can find a cheap or free one.
So i have been using a monitor to use it.All been going well.
    Today
The screen shows the sony and Phenoix logo on boot up but when it goes to Windows, it is all dark a black blue screen.
You can also press f2 for the bois menu and see that or f12 and see the menu with the start up in last known good start up etc.
But it wont boot up to windows menu icons wont even show windows start up menu.
Anyone got any ideas not a expert but like to have a go and fix this as its the best way to learn.

Directory Services restore mode (Windows domain controllers only)
    Debugging mode
disable automatic restart on system faliure

    start windows normally
    reboot

if like my sony laptop then there is no bay to access the hd which means would have to remove bottom of laptop casing to access the hd. see if that boot cd can do a scandisk \checkdisk to correct any error as certain you have software corruption caused when windows did a hiccup. that is how i fixed a vista hd by doing a scandisk checking for errors. which vgn laptop is it?

If you have a windows install disk, you can use that to fix your laptop. Once it gets to installation part of the cd,there will be an option to go into recovery mode. There you can run a command for scan disk. I think it was checkdisk/ F
