I can't seem to figure out how to share with only specific people on the network. How do I do this and not share with "everybody" on the network?
i think your best bet is to use a network program, that way you can limit other's access to you. lanshark comes to mind, but is probably not private enough. alliance is one that i think can be used on a lan, but might not be good with real large share sizes. waste or WasteAgain can run on lan. you could run an ftp server on the LAN, and give accounts to your buddies/colleagues/what-have-you. there are many options.
I normally don't recommend a 3rd party program when windows will normally do the job easily with a bit of research. jericho---are all your computers windows7 or are there some older windows types on your network? brands not windows?
1. Make user accounts with a password on your computer for whoever you want to share with. Lets pretend the user name is Jane. 2. Once you have created the user account you need to log off and log into that account so that her account is fully set up. 3. One the account is fully set up then log back out and then back into yours Once you are in your Account: 4. Open up "cmd" with Run as Administrator 5. type this in: net user Jane /active:no hit enter what this will do is take he name away from the welcome screen but will still keep her in the computer. 6. Select properties of the folder you want to share. On the sharing tab, the users you created should be available when selecting "share with" 7. Select security tab of the shared folder. Make sure you have the read/write permissions for that user as you wish OR Keep sharing with everyone, but in advanced sharing options, turn ON password protected sharing and only give the password to whoever you want. If you do this, make sure you have a user account separate from the administrator account so you arent giving away your main password and someone mucking up your system.
