Do you have a green port? Blue is usually a line in and the pink is usually for a microphone. If you go to the control panel. There is a place to setup the sound. If you click on that it should display a list of all the sound devices. Try configuring the sound.
Tried all that already I am thinking the new motheboard (well secondhand) i put in (with built in graphics/sound card) is not working correctly
drivers specific to my motherboard (i think) I just googled for my motherboard type,and used what it listed
O.K. Hursty, I have realtek '97 also, go to the bottom and click on the speaker icon, bring up all of the volumes you control and see if they are muted or turned down. other than that click option and preferences and enable the other volumes you need to control. Now, I don't know if you did this yet or not, but hope it helps.
Somethings you could check. Go into the bios and make sure that the onboard sound is enabled. Press the windows key and break. Open the device manager. There you can check to see what sound controllers are installed. It should say if it is working properly or not. Here you can check what driver you have installed (properties, driver tab). You many want to update or reinstall the driver (it isn't working now can't hurt to try). Plug your speakers or headphones into the green connector (should be labled headphones or speakers) on the back of the computer (assuming there is probably ones on the front). Sometimes restarting with the sound properly plugged in can help. Do you have amplified speakers (do the speakers have an independent power source)?
Buying a new sound card is probably the way to go. The only thing we didn't test was the speakers themselves. When you configure speaks in Windows XP does it have an option to test the speakers by playing a sound? In Vista and Windows 7 you configure, select you configuration and then test. It then plays a tone through each individual speaker. I don't remember if XP does that or not. If it does did you get sound at that point? Everytime you gave an example you refered to applications playing sound.
dont thinks its an issue with the speakers, I can listen to mp3 or watch films on media player fine Ordered a new PCI sound card, only cost me £3 delivered,so worth a go
