I have a Hp dv6000 series laptop. The other day I did a restore on it and after that when it goes thru its boot up I don't get the vista startup page with my login. Instead I get a black page with my mouse curser. I have put my windows vista disc in and ran start up fix with no success. I have tried a recovery thru my disc but then it will power off and go back to the blank page with a curser. I get a message when I start up my pc that states "Windows did not shut down succesfully." I have tried booting in safe mode with no success. I have went back to my disc and and started the command prompt and tried the bootfix. I have also ran a disc check with no errors showing up. Does anyone have a fix for this where I would not have to do a clean install of windows and loose my files or maybe a program to download on a disc I could boot from and fix this error? Any help would be appreciated very much. Another thing I have tried is to just upgrade to windows 7 but when i have tried that I get a message telling me that there is no driver for my dvd reader and it can not install.

I think the HP recovery tools include backing up your files before you do a clean installation. It does for my HP desktop.

Have you tried the Last Know Good Configuration?

I think you keep your files if you do a repair installation of Windows.
