My wife is using a wireless connection to the internet on her laptop. Her operating system is Vista. When she shuts down the laptop she always forgets to turn off the router which is in another room. She wants to know if it is possible to have a reminder saying something like "Don't forget the Router!" when she clicks on the Shut Down button. If so she will want me to install it so please can I have instructions.
Is there any reason aside from saving a minimal amount of electricity, to turn off the router every time you turn off a laptop? I've not encountered a situation where people make this a habit so I ask why.
To some people, this could be the "best" security setting? No one hacking into a powered down network... Also, some people are so hyper-environmental that saving $0.50 a month on electricity makes them feel better about themselves. We can only guess unless OP wants to educate us.
jjziman, i have 2 routers, 1 in the basement & a wireless in my 2nd floor computer room which i turn off after i've finished with the computer which is also off when i'm not using it.

i don't shut the modem & router off in the basement as i'm on my computer 2+ times a day so i leave them on. the wireless router i do turn off each time i turn off my desk top unless i'm doing updates on a customer's computer. i don't have the security setup on the wireless as ran into issues when trying to connect customer's laptop via wireless to the router so i got rid of the encryption & disconnected the antenna on the router. i don't have to worry about signal getting to my next door neighbor as the signal has to get thru 12" of poured concrete of our house walls.
Neither do I. In fact, I have a standby button on my Surfboard so that it can conserve power and the wireless modem cannot be used. That way everything's green on the board.
My main router/wireless access point is on the main floor of the house and always stays on because nearly every room in my house has networked equipment. from the PS3 in my 2nd floor bedroom, to the Wii, wifes laptop, kids PC, printer, even exercise bike on the main floor etc... That router runs a cable to my basement workshop where my home server is located and I have a small unmanaged Cisco switch with a few open ports that I physically plug in (after virus check/removal)pc's/laptops I repair. Especially nice since I keep microsoft SP's and updates on the server so I really don't go out of my network much for repairs, and my wired file transfers from server are bit faster than wireless. Of course i make sure wireless is working when I'm done, but as DDP said it is a pain to set up every machine that comes for repair , so I guess thats 1 reason I didn't think of.
