Hi. Just recently, I switched Internet Providers. Although the new service is good (- surfing, downloads, etc. -), I discovered that I can't really upload, anymore. For example, I tried RapidShare. I never gets past 0%. On sites like blogger.com, it now takes something like 8-10 hours to upload what used to take under an hour before (with the other ISP). Sometimes, it stops without uploading anything. And I very much doubt that the reason might be connection problems. MegaUpload works during the actual upload process, but it gives me an error message at the end, saying an error occurred. (In all fairness, I used to to get that error message with the other ISP, too.) Can anyone give me some advice about this, please? P.S. I'm using XP.
This sounds more like a firewall problem. You should check all firewall settings; if you have anti-virus software -> check there. If you use Windows Firewall, change its settings.
It's not a firewall problem. This is a computer that I don't need protected. I only do downloads and uploads on it. So, no firewall, no anti-virus, no anti-spyware, not even Windows Firewall. I have the exact same settings as with the previous ISP. But, now, I can download just the same, but I can upload very little. (The ad for the service said 5Mbps download, 800k upload.) Maybe I just have to tweak the router to open the ports, but I don't know what ports to open and I'm not exactly sure how to do it effectively. (Oh, and I have the exact same router as with the previous service, and I never had to tweak anything then.) I can barely upload anything with BitTorrent, I can't upload anything on RapidShare in Firefox... I don't know what's going on.
Sounds like your new ISP throttles uploads, is it here: http://wiki.vuze.com/w/Bad_ISPs or does a port check in Bittorrent show green? Opening a port will help your DL/UL speeds and isn't that hard, BT uses one port, any over 10,000 - 60,000 is fine. This site should show your router and has guides for a static ip if needed: go here, find your router, click it, find Bittorrent, click it and follow the guide: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm (skip any ad for ip config).
Thanks for the reply, Mistycat. I just discovered that BitTorrent seems to work. I have one torrent right now that uploads just fine, like before. So, probably, all of them should work. But, if I go to a site like http://virusscan.jotti.org/, to check a file for viruses online, I can't upload shit. Just like RapidShare, it just won't receive anything from my computer. EET, I'll try that site, and let you know, but a little later. It's just that I don't have Flash, so I'll have to wait and ask my roommate to do it (- he has the same ISP).

Among them: RapidShare and virusscan.jotti.org; and I was using them before just fine. WHAT COULD IT BE, PLEASE?
Not a clue here, still leaning to your ISP unless your roommate has no issues. Try at an off peak time maybe.
What does "leaning to your ISP" mean in this case, Mistycat? Do you think I should call the ISP and ask? All the computers in this household have the same problem. So, yes, my roommate's, too.
Simply meams I think your ISP may be throttling on the upload side but I don't think asking them about illegal uploading, specially torrents is a very good idea. Perhaps naming the ISP and asking if anyone has info on it over in the p2p forum, someone may know.
But, like I said, I'm not complaining about torrents, illegal RapidShare file-sharing, or anything like that. I'd like to know why I can't scan a file (over 1 MB) online, at virusscan.jotti.org, for example, because my computer cannot upload the file to their servers in order to complete the scan! Did you visit that site, to see what it's about? Surely, it's a legitimate site. I HAVE NO P2P COMPLAINT!!! Maybe someone could tell me where or whom to ask, please.
Jotti is definitely legitimate, nothing wrong with asking about that type of uploading. It's just that ISP's take a dim view of torrents even though there are plenty of legal uses for it like Open Office, Linux D/L's, etc. Now I'm thinking firewall, etc like EET said or browser except more than one computer is involved. By all means, call your ISP but don't mention that P2P is fine.
Okay, thanks, Mistycat. The thing is, I've tried to upload a picture file (i.e. around 200 kB) on Jotti, and it worked as usual. Then, I tried uploading a 30 MB RAR file. Nothing uploaded! I think that, if the ISP is deliberately trying to block uploads over 1 MB (or something like that), it won't lead me on the right path. [And it surely seems that this is the case.] I was hoping to ask somebody (on this forum) who would know how to get the full service the ISP advertised. Because they did tell me 800k uploads and I never saw anything on their site about certain uploads being blocked, you know... P.S. I'm quite sure that there are no firewall issues, unless the modem or router have their firewalls active somehow. But I never messed with those settings myself.
Well, most routers do contain a firewall, a green port check in Bittorrent will show no firewall but I'll bet you get yellow or red with a router. Bittorrent and utorrent are very similar, if not identical, and utorrent has one at tools>preferences I think. Not common but some modems contain firewalls too. ISP's don't generally advertise they block illegal or legal DL/UL and,in some cases, deny it. Google it and you'll find many discussions on ISP's not delivering what they advertise. I actually got a phone call from my ISP about my uploading then they blocked certain uploads for everyone in Canada and denied they were doing it until it became common knowledge.
Telus now but it was Shaw who were doing the U/L throttling and I think still are but at least they own up to it now.
Oh, okay, thanks. I'm using Teksavvy. I think they block the modem interface to the user (- with the previous ISP, I was able to access it just fine -) so they become able to prohibit any uploads bigger than 1 MB (or any other small figure like that, I'm not 100% sure). Guess there's no way around that, huh?
So, it's like a plan that you have subscribed to?!?? Maybe you can pay a different rate & have "normal" access? o.0
