Hi, im having a problem with my external HDD. Basically, there are hundreds of random files and folders appearing on the root of the hard drive. The file names are not even proper characters. for example ≤Ωvæ≈_. Ѫ or ╜Θö╟╪:.₧░· It also wont let me delete any of these files even through CMD or 'file shredder'. When i try and delete them it says 'cannot delete file: cannot read source file or disk'. The folders are apparently empty. The actual files' sizes vary but all say above 200mb??? They are also not a known filetype?? I dont really want to format the HDD because i dont have enough room anywhere to backup my good files. any advice is appreciated, let me know if you need anymore information
It's indicative of a damaged filesystem or a damaged HDD. Since it is external, it could just be a bad enclosure. You could try putting the drive in another enclosure first. You'd better go out and buy that backup drive NOW!!!
If it is not deleting from CMD then you should try changing the file name and then try to delete it. It is usually a sign of corrupted file.
Backup what you need off of it and do a format of the drive if that doesn't work i don't know what to tell you
Sounds like the files on that HDD are corrupt and the only way to remove them is to format the drive.
