    Hi forum,

I have performed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate, I backed up everything from my hard drive using Genie back up manager & transferred everything back over from an external hard drive. I have successfully activated my product etc.
I am in the process of re-loading my programs, office, etc my e-mail client I used in Vista was MSN Premium also I used IE8. I try to load my MSN Premuim disk and fails to load as it states I am disconnected from the internet, I have a LAN based connection which is working no problem as I can access windows live mail & msn messenger, my IE icon is the default icon and when I try to access via the icon, nothing happens, it's the same when I try any web links, nothing, it seems to me that IE has not been loaded because as I say, I have my internet connection and receiving live mail & messenger.
I have also noticed that my icons for example in 'My computer' are the default icons which to me is strange.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The problem, I am certain, lies with your backup method. I would assume this Genie program when it backed up your programs made copies of the install folders and possibly a copy of the registry. So now you on a different OS and attempting to "restore" these programs. Problem is Genie is "restoring" to a diferent OS, so the programs may have been installed on Vista in such a way that makes them incompatible with Windows 7. They may just not be compatible with Windows 7. etc. etc. Your best bet is to make a list of all the programs you have/want installed. Perform a clean install of Windows 7 again, and then reinstall all of the programs manually. The only thing you copy onto Windows 7 from you Genie backup is your Pictures, Music, and Documents.

Thanks for the reply......and understand your diagnosis.

Update, I have made progress in gaining access to my MSN Premium now that I transferred my folders from Windows.old folder into the new Windows folder, still experiencing problems though, but working through them. Still cannot open IE 8 even though my icon has now appeared after folder transfer.....

Do yourself a favor dump IE totally and go download something better like FireFox or Opera.
