I just had this happen to a computer the other day. The computer ended up having some bad clusters on the hard drive. It would be strange for this to be the same problem you're having, but it's worth looking into. To perform a check disk, go to My Computer and right click on your main drive (probably c:). From there go the the Tools tab and check both boxes to perform a hard drive diagnostic (scan and repair). Your computer will need to reboot to start the utility. After this completes, run Windows Update again and see if it works properly.
