Hi. I have a desktop and am having trouble getting my computer past the safe mode screen. The computer starts and then goes to the safe mode screen, but the computer is unresponsive to the keyboard. I tried the keyboard on another computer to make sure it works and it does. The computer counts down 30 seconds on the safe mode screen and then moves on but it doesn't allow me to choose anything. The computer then goes on the microsoft xp screen but then just restarts the computer. How do I troubleshoot this?

    Thank You

You need to do a chkdsk c: /f . For this you need a windows installation bootcd to get into the dos screen so you can run the chkdsk command. I prefer and recommend using a bartpe bootcd to run this command.

More than likely the computer had a abnormal shutdown, this corrupted the system files. During bootup if windows can't find the next startup files (because they are missing or corrupt) you will get the errors you are encountering. A chkdsk c: /f will usually fix this.

If this problem was cause because of restoring a backup image or moving hard drives around to different positions. Then you will need to use "paragon rescue kit 9.0 express" bootcd it has a boot corrector that can fix problems cause by these exotic condition boot problems.

So I press F12 to change the boot order so that I can have the cdrom boot before the harddrive. i cant do that because the cursor or selector wont move. the keyboard works as i checked it on another computer. What I find odd is that I am able to press F12 to get to the boot order screen but once there the keyboard is unresponsive. So if I cant have the cdrom boot before the harddrive, am I correct in that I cant even access the windows disk to do a repair or whatever?

instead of f12 try pressing the "delete" key when the computer is booting up. Delete is the usual default key to enter the BIOS to change your boot sequence. This will bypass windows completely and let your computer boot directly from the cd.

by pressing del, i was able to change the boot order and put the cdrom before the hard disk. however, no luck. I get a screen saying press any key if I want to boot from the cd. However, nothing happens and the computer just continues to reset again.
    any ideas?
