Windows XP update failure - ntfs.sys

#1 05 Nov 2009 @ 14:28
Hi All,

I've had my beast of a pc for a while, and automatic updates has been set to on without any problems. However, i booted my pc last night and AVG picked up some trojans, which i clicked to remove without thinking.

After this windows hung and on rebooting gave me the missing ntfs.sys error. I tried to boot into safe mode, but still the same, i loaded the recovery console from my xp cd and ran a chkdsk /r and fixboot still with no affect. I booted from Hirens and copied the ntfs.sys into the correct location, still no joy.

Stupidly i then ran a repair from my cd which was XP sp1a, which obviously overwrote alot of the dll files, after the dos part of the set up (blue screen section) i came against a constant reboot loop on the xp loading screen. I used Hirens boot cd to try and do a system restore, which i wish i had done in the first place AAAAAHHHHH!! But still nothing. I can boot into safe mode but i keep getting explorer.exe entry point not found errors. I again tried a system restore from a much early point but its exactly the same.

When i try to uninstall service pack 2 using hirens, it says its not installed, im assuming due to my repair attempt from an earlier version.

I believe i have a conflict between my registry being at sp2 and my files being at sp1a. Any ideas how i can rectify this? My files are all accessible, but i'd hate to have to install windows on another drive as it would mean having to reinstall all my programs, which i'm not sure i have the install sofware for any more.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
Donna
