I have been using the same PC for two years now performing the same tasks. Now it has decided to stop responding and shut the computer down at random times. When that happens, not even the task manager can be opened and the PC cannot be shut down manually. I have all the new window's updates, I have defraged the computer, disk cleanup, and even cleaned out some programs. I know it used to have a problem downloading some plug ins before. I haven't have a problem for a while though.

Kodiak_,
At first glance I see Two Anti-Virus scanners in your running processes..
This is a no-no, Never run more that One AV as they can cause conflicts, random errors and is really less protection than just one AV.
Choose One of these and turn the other off or uninstall it.
This in itself may clear your problems or you may need a little more cleaning.
Do that and let me know. If you still have problems we can work on them…..

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading; The few who learn by observation;
The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves...
Please DO NOT PM ME for support... Lets keep it on the board, so we can all learn.

Hey 2OldGeek, I'm the friend that pointed her here and to Hijackthis. The problems that she was having are prior to the install of the MS Security Essentials, I told her to try that as it has worked very well for me and seems to run a lot lighter than Norton does. Although I agree with you on not having both running, I do know her problems were occurring prior to both anti-viruses being installed.

First Step is to uninstall one of the AV’s. It can only cause problems while trying to clean out the real culprit.
Some Malware will disable Task Manager so it can hide and become harder to find.
Avira has a Rescue Disk that is constantly updated to remove the latest Malware , Trojans, Viruses and also reset the System processes that have been disabled.
On a clean computer follow these instructions to create a Rescue disk to be run on the infected computer:
http://forum.avira.com/wbb/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=82163
After running the Rescue Disk, Reboot to Windows, check things out , create a new Hijackthis Log and post it here letting me know what problems remain.
I will analyze the new Log and issue some instructions for finishing the Cleanup and get back to you as soon as I can…

Alright, thank you 2OldGeek. It may take a day or so to find someone else's computer that's clean. Once that is done, I'll pop back on and let you know how it goes. I uninstalled the Security Essentials.
I'll respond when I can :)
And thanks Influe!

Kodiak_,
Take your time, follow the instructions and then, after I have a chance to analyze your Log, we can run some malware programs, etc. to get you back in good shape.
I'll be here,
