This morning I ran Malwarebytes and SuperAntivirus as I do periodically. SuperAntivirus didn't find any major threats but Malwarebytes came up with a list of files affected by a PUP virus. My next step would normally be to press Remove then restart the computer as requested to remove all remaining traces. The same thing happened about two weeks ago. After pressing Remove I restarted the computer as advised, only to find that Windows 8 wouldn't load. I tried everything, including trying to boot up with the installation disk and a recovery flashdrive. Nothing worked. Neither the disk nor the flashdrive were recognized. I ended up having to take it to a technician who took several days to fix the problem. Currently I have Malwarebytes up but I am afraid to press Remove and even more afraid to restart/switch off the computer. Can anyone help?

You will notice from the log below that Avast is shown as off. For some reason it switches off without warning so that I have no protection.

    Hi Kafka and aldan,

@aldan, those lines are not needed but are not the real problem.

Looke like a couple of AV's were running at the same time and conflicting also IObit is a known distributor of malware and Adware.

    @Kafka, start with:

    AdwCleaner

Please download adwcleaner and save to your desktop.

    • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • Click on Delete.
    • Confirm each time with Ok. if asked.
    • Your computer will be rebooted automatically.
    • A text file will open after the restart.
    • Please copy and past the content of that log file with your next post.

Note: The log can also be located at C: >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <-- denotes the number of times the application has been ran, so in this case may be something like R1.

Get that log back to me and we can go from there to clean up the rest. You have a lot of junk on there.

    2oG

Attached is the log as requested. I was very relieved when the computer successfully rebooted. The last time I had this problem (2 weeks ago) I ran Malwarebytes, clicked on Remove, the rebooted as requested. On that occasion it wouldn't reboot and I had to get it fixed by a technician.

Greetings, Kafka and Welcome to Afterdawn Virus and Spyware Forum!!
As I said you have a lot of junk on your machine, as you can see…..

My name is 2oldGeek and I am a technician that has been around since before there was an internet lol. I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.

I have put together something’s for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us

Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
I will ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.

Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
It helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require me to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.

Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.

Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps me understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

    For a starter:

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts. Turn off any Anti-Virus or Malware scanner…
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Seven, or 8 right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and press any key to start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message and we’ll see what this turns up..

Thanks, I ran Adware as you advised and was relieved to find that the computer rebooted successfully (whereas last time it wouldn't restart). I appear to be virus-fee. Do I still need to follow the instructions in your last post?

What appears is not always true. To be sure you are really clean and don't have any Trojans that can re-infect you I advise following the full cleaning procedure and I'll give you a little advice on how to keep your machine protected from more infections...

    your choice..

    I'll be here to help.

Hi Kafka, I guess that means you wish to continue cleaning your computer.

As I thought, you have a JavaScript Trojan that would not let JRT remove the bad registry and File entries and will probably continue to infect your PC:
    Suspicious HKCU\..\Run entries found. Trojan:JS/Medfos.B?
You also have some other problems that show up in the HJT Log that we can take care of.

I cannot see into your computer so, you must provide me with the Logs I ask for in order for me to see what we needs to be done. Here are 3 simple rules to please observe as we work together:

Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
I will ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with my tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.

Please do not describe the computer as "the same"; this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with any of the programs I ask you to run, just skip it, run the next one and let me know.

And since you are running Win 8 you should right click the programs and click “Run as administrator”.

    -Security Check-
    • Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
    • Save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
    • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

    --RogueKiller—
    • Download & SAVE to your Desktop RogueKiller from here.
    • Quit all programs that you may have started.
    • Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!
    • For Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 right-click and select "Run as Administrator" to start.
    • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
    • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
    • Then Click on "Scan" button
    • Wait until the Status box shows "Scan Finished"
    • click on "delete"
    • Wait until the Status box shows "Deleting Finished"
    • Click on "Report" and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply.
    • The log should be found in RKreport[1].txt on your Desktop
    • Exit/Close RogueKiller

re my last message, I wasn't given the option of saving either program to the desktop, they ran straight away. As a consequence I couldn't run RogueKiller as an administrater.

    That's OK, it worked...

It will take me some time to go over these logs and do some research. So hang in there and I'll get back as soon as I can. May not be tonight. I'm an old guy lol :)

Windows 8 has MSE Antivirus built into the Defender. Do you have Defender turned off? You cannot use 2 AV programs at the same time, it causes conflict and is as bad as having NO AV at all….
You have plenty of drive space and 3GB memory is sufficient but you are running too many apps in the background that really don’t need to run all the time. It just uses resources and slows you down. We can take care of that, no problem.

Also, were you able to get your C drive defragged?

After running AdwCleaner and RogueKiller, a lot of this stuff has been cleaned but, not all at this stage.

Please run a new HijackThis and post the Log so I can see what is left over. That is if you wish to continue until your computer is Clean…

    Also, please:
Download DDS from here: dds.scr or here: dds.com and save it to your desktop.

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it. Avast does have a script blocker.
Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Anti-Virus temporarily if needed.
Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool.
Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.
A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.
    • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    DDS.txt and Attach.txt
    • Save both reports to your desktop
    • Please Copy & Paste the contents of the following logs in your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file.

Had a couple of beers the other day and felt about 25 - then my wife told me "Go find you a Girlfriend, and LEAVE ME ALONE!!!". I just can't win. LOL
