Friend of mine bought an external hd and he wants to copy his entire pc hd onto the external hd. I got him a program called Acronis True Image but i have no idea how to use it for that. What would be the steps for doing this?

True image can do 3 types of backups
    1.clone
    2.image backup
    3.incrementals

You want to do an image backup.

open up true image then choose
1.backup/my computer(check the boxes of all the partitions you want copied)/full backup/normal compression

This will make a compressed backup file (called TIB). You save this large file on the external drive like any other file. This TIB file contains an exact duplicate of your computer, you can restore this file onto a new drive and the "new drive" will bootup the computer.

Don't do a clone, because this will overwrite everything on the external drive. Don't do incrementals because that is more of an "expert" setting. A full image backup is all you need, that is all I ever do.

Make sure you make a true image bootcd and save it somewhere. This way you can restore your TIB file onto a new drive.
