Trying to fix a friends notebook. I believe it recently had a virus/malware and once he got that sorted he has no audio on his laptop.

It's an old Gateway MX6211B running on Windows XP and upon start up there is no volume icon in the taskbar and when you go into the Sounds & Audios in the control panel it says no device found.

After too much time googling without much sucess as to what appears to be a common problem with this machine i still can't find the answer.

The official Gateway support site doesn't even have the MX6211B listed for support on their own site.

I did find 2 solutions on other forums but having tried them both failed and i'm back at square one.

So here's hoping one of you guys can help me sort it out.
