I've downloaded a file before that was literally 2MB but opened to a full 140 megs, but when I compress, I only get a compression ratio of 97-98%. I've looked through and tinkered with the settings of WinRAR, but cant seem to get it to compress how I want (around 75% or better). Am I overlooking something in the settings?
2mb to 140mb ... errrmmmmmm.. that's BS .. must be a cue file or something.. it most certainly isn't the file with all the 140mb's data.. that must be coming from somewhere else.
Yep. Tried that already. Not BS, and I know bin/cue files. I've done a lot of Xbox & Xbox 360 modding, and more times than not, when when I download a WinRAR'ed ISO that's Xbox related, it is GREATLY compressed (half it's size or less). For example, I uploaded the link below, which is a 1.43 MB WinRAR file that opens up to be a 253 MB ISO. The ISO is a "Wave 4 Activation Disc". Try it and see. 1.43mb's to 258mb's.. lots of completely empty space then... like heaps and heaps of 00 00 00 00 All compression does is remove the whitespace and empty tails from clusters. IF you had even made an old xbox bios flash disk you would know that the bios itself was never over 1mb, but to get the thing to boot a dummy file with nothing in was added.. usually 500mb's open that huge file in a hex editor and see.. there will not me much more than 3 or 4 mb's of actual data.. the rest will be empty space. The TOTAL size of the contents of that iso is 6.3 mbs TOTAL CONTENTS!!! .. the rest is padding.. This is all that is in it.. Well known fact that video files which are mostly back/blank can be compressed well. I don't know how people make these things, they are telling the iso what size to unpack to. I guess they are making an iso with a large dummy file then removing that file before or after compression. There is your answer anyway.. there is NOT 250+mb's data compressed in there.. only 6.3 It's not possible to compress normal data down by more than say 30% .. if it was there would be no 9 gig dvd torrents or things like that out there.. they would all be 1-2mb wouldn't they? IF you are trying to make 360 hack iso's (which that link suggests) wouldn't it be a better idea posting in the 360 section?
IMO get away from winrar and the errors that are generated ..go to winzip it was designed in a time when REAL compression was nesc. I keep a copy of rar so that i can fix their errors but use winzip as the norm F
Understood. Makes sense. Understood. Did it. I see what you mean. Understood. Understood. I'm not trying to make 360 hack ISOs. The link to that ISO was the only thing I had on my PC to show what I meant. Most of my time here IS spent in the 360 section, but this was a WinRAR topic (Windows Software). no worries.. you can open iso files with a lot of archive managers.. even winrar.. I found 7zip gave overall a better compression, but it really depends what the contents are you are compressing down. some things have a lot of empty space.. but others are pretty full to start with. best thing to do is experiment.
