Sony Vaio laptop multiple problems

Hello all. I am trying to sort a Sony Vaio laptop for my niece. The OS is Windows 7 64bit.The problems are many. First off, when it is switched on it tries to configure updates, unsuccessfully, and rolls back the updates. Second, it gives the message that Microsoft.net\framework\v2.050727\mscoworks.dll could not be found. Third, though it is connected to the internet-it says wireless is connected, Internet Explorer "cannot display the web page". However, AVG is able to update no problem. I have been 4 hours trying to sort it out and have gotten nowhere. Can anyone please help? Tanx in advance....(",)**
