Hey everyone I had a quick question. I have had my computer for a very long time and my printer for just as long. It finally broke down on me and I just bought one from Wal-Mart. I bought an HP Deskjet D2660. I try to install it and says it can't because I have windows 98. Is there any way to get it to work on my computer? What would I need to do to upgrade my windows 98 to windows 2000 or XP? Any help would be great. I am trying to install the disk that the printer came with. What if I just download the driver for the printer would that work?
That printer may not support drivers that are approved for Win98x. Are you running Win 98SE? Check the HP support forums. If it is not supported, it is simple to upgrade to Windows XP, but you will need a Windows XP install disk and key.
Check the specs required for the software before buying win2000 or xp,win 2000 isn't that much of a step up but xp is,you need to becareful your hardware can support either
Under Windows 98 you're out of luck. That printer is only supported under 2000, XP, and Vista. Those are your choices. If you have had your computer for a long time it may not support the newer Operating Systems (or if it does, not very well at all). Time for a technology refresh. You can probably buy a replacement PC with a new OS for little more than the price of the OS itself, unless you stumble upon a copy of 2000, but you are just delaying the inevitable.
Windows 98? I would say it is time for an upgrade. I am hard up for cash so I understand not upgrading. Like others have said try Windows 2000. Not Windows ME, Windows 2000. Great OS, better than 98 IMO.
