I have an external drive which I purchased on ebay that XP only recognizes sometime. It is there and then it is not. Now is one of those not times. I do not know the manufacturer so I have been unable to locate new drivers. I don't understand why xp only recognizes the drive occasionally. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

Drivers are generally not required for external hard disk drives. If possible, try using a different USB cable for hooking up the drive, and plug it to different ports on your computer. The problem might also be related to power supply problems on the external drive.

It could be that usb virus that was popular the last couple of years.. https://marriottschool.byu.edu/it/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=38

but my money is on a faulty usb cable.
