So I'm going to be buying a DSI XL (first one I've owned) this week and I can't decide what back up/homebrew card to use.
I've been reading a lot and it seems I should go with
    AceKard 2i
    or
    M3i Zero

and if I get a DSI XL with firmware v1.5 I'm screwed. correct?

If your Dsi has firmware of 1.4 then the acekard has been blocked with this firmware and will give an error, but your acekard will work on all other DS systems and DSi's of firmware 1.3 and lower still.

To fix this you need to update the actual acekards firmware (different to Akaio RC2 software you copy to your SD card)so you must find someone with a DS/DSlite or DSi with firmware 1.3 to run the update file.

There are 2 files in the download each file is for whatever DS system you will run the update from, (One for DS/Lite andf one for A dsi 1.3 or lower) so whatever DS you manage to get hold of use the corresponding update file.

Copy that file to the SD cards root directory (you should of alredy done the akaio bit)... load the card on the borrowed DS and run the that update file (make sure you dont interupt the update and have a full battery when doing it, it will only take a minute but you dont want it stopping half way)

This file is not on acekards website as it has some copyrightable infomation within it, (which actually fools the DSi into thinking its a guinine game, "Danny Phantom")

There are more detailed guides online just search for "DSI 1.4 firmware fix for acekard" or "Danny Phantom Acekard fix" if this isnt detailed enough for you.

That was Detailed enough. So should I go with the M3i then?
I have no problem with finding another DS I could use if the AceKard 2i is better

sorry i actual meant that reply for the previous post LOL..

I think the new 1.5 fimware will block all flashcards

the acekard and m3real can be updated, but it is an unknown how long it will take to provide a fix. last time for 1.4 firmware release it took about a month. this time ninendo may do better with 1.5 at blocking cards.

i think if you buy an XL now it will come with 1.4 firmware, just dont bother updating to 1.5 when it asks you to until there is a fix released for it.

I have an acekard2i running AKAIO 1.6 RC2 Firmware & 8GB card which is nice and fast loading , i think it is a great card, you shouldnt have a problem with it, just try not to buy a fake one do your research on the place you are going to buy from....

I hear good things about M3izero cards too but dont know a lot about them...only that they can be updated by the PC via a cable, which sounds handy if you dont own an old DS for the update procedure above.

Is there are good place to buy them in the US? if not I hear ConsoleSource is a good place.

I take it that AKAIO is a 3rd party that does Firmwares?

    Sorry for the dumb question.

For the US im not sure sorry, It would end up costing you too much to get them from here in the UK... just dont get tempted by cheap chinese prices they are usually fakes...

AKAIO is an alternative firmware just for acekard (better than the official by miles)
makes the acekard very good, just a worry that the bloke who makes it may decide to stop!
