Hi, This is my setup and was wondering if I would be getting the full potential of a Blu-Ray movie... HD4870 connected DVI-to-HDMI to my receiver. Receiver is Sony HTSS360 which doesn't decode the new HD formats... Will I be missing out on something if I get a BD-Rom? or should I just opt for a stand alone??
You would get good quality playback with that card, but you'll have to run a separate cable from your PC to your Receiver for audio, since you will not get any audio with DVI. If you want the full potential (picture/audio) of BD movies, then I would go with a standalone Blu-ray player. They're cheaper (most of the time) than a PC and more efficient. Go with either a Pioneer, Panasonic, or Oppo model. I have a Panasonic DMP-BD55 and the picture quality is amazing. I recommend any of these players (for best picture/audio): Pioneer BDP-23FD Pionner BDP-09FD (very expensive) Panasonic DMP-BD80 OPPO BDP-83
friends do you have idea of what is a blu ray in tv......hmmm lemme tell you about it......blu ray is a small set of classes wrappind or extending other network and resources peculiar to interactive tv.... SPAM removed

I thought it was a good idea until I got one LOL. Also depending on your VGA card you can get audio through DVI. A lot of the modern cards have a cable that runs from the spdif connector on the mainboard to the card so when you connect a DVI to HDMI it loops the onboard sound card digital audio through the video card. Anyway as long as you buy a retail pack that has good software with it then go for it.
Only reason I would buy a blu-rom/burner is to backup my movies. Prices on blanks are still too expensive for burning.
