Hello, Can any one help me? I have just purchased a blu-ray player that plays dts hd movies but for some reason when I push play to watch the movie it will not play in surround sound. All the previews sound good but not the movie. My receiver is about 5 yaers old. Thanks to anyone that can help.

by surround sound, you mean Dolby Digital AC3, it will not work. DTS and Dolby are competitors in the audio market and if your audio equipment will not decode DTS, your player will downgrade it to stereo.

There is only one way around this, and that is if your Blu-ray player has separate 7.1 analog audio out, and your receiver has 5.1 (or better) pre amp IN. I think the Sony BDP-S550 was a popular model that had this ability. Then you can run each channel separately to your pre amp.

I can be wrong but some blu ray players have options in the audio settings that will automatically downmix DTS into 5.1 AC3 mixes.

I have the ps3 and i am going to order a Sony STRDH 800 receiver with onkyo SKS HT540 speakers. The new movies that are in dts hd format would not play in surround sound on my current set up. The new receiver says it supports true hd and dts hd.

I thinkg I read somewhere that the PS3 doesn't support True HD bitstreaming. If that is true you won't be getting the True HD sound. All components need to support this. My set up is as follows:

Movie (Rush Snakes & Arrows) - With DTS-HD Audio Master Mix
BD Player (Sony) - Supports DTS-HD Audio Master through HDMI
Receiver (Yamaha with HDMI inputs/outputs) Supports DTS-HD Audio Master

Result - Pure DTS-HD Audio Master coming out of my 5 speakers n Sub.

It is correct that the PS3 doesn't bitstream HD audio, meaning passthrough untouched to the audio receiver. However you can still get DTS-HD MA and TrueHD with your receiver. You need to set the PS3's audio settings to HDMI --> PCM. This setting will decode the HD audio internally then send the audio to the receiver as PCM. The result is the exact same as if the audio was bitstreamed.

Your audio receiver WILL NOT DISPLAY DTS-HD MA or TrueHD., it will show LPCM. The PS3's display will show that DTS-HD MA or TrueHD wil playing though.

    Good luck.
