I've been working on finding the best way to stream hd movie files or backups of bluray to from my pc to my tv and am looking for the best solution. Found that avi files stream to my ps3 using nero home media 4 without a problem but hd mp4 playback is choppy and unwatchable. I would expect the same outcome trying to stream a bluray backup. Do i need a home media box or something...any input is appreciated...please help.
i just set something up like you explained. i purchased the seagate theater+ (i guess there is a "theater" version as well that supposedly is not as good). i have the theater+ hooked up to my receiver via hdmi (my receiver connects to my tv via hdmi for video) and have the ethernet port connect to my router/switch. i have ripped a couple of my blurays to the external hdd on my pc (same network as the theater+). i have twonkey media installed on my pc. i am able to use the theater+ (latest firmware) to find the media server (twonkey on my pc) and play the bluray m2ts files. works great over wired connection. tried wireless but one rip (transformers) was very jittery, even though i was using a "N" gamer adapter. anyway, i would highly recommend this setup. the only flaw i've found so far is that the theater+ cannot play HD audio (trueHD, etc.) so i've had to use smartslabs tsmuxer to down convert the hd audio to ac3. but hopefully seagate will eventually release another firmware update so the theater+ supports hd audio.
