new biuld / with some experience

hi its been a while since ive been on here but now that im finaly getting ready to biuld the new comp , i thought id come in here and just ask a few questions.

firstly i have windows 7 on my current hdd and i was wondering if i could just take it out andput it straight in to my new computer?

o yeah the specs are

cpu: intel core i7 920
motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R
gpu: ATI ASUS HD 5870
ram: TR3X6G1600C9 - 6GB (3x2GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3, PC3-12800 (1600MHz)
then just a hdd and a dvd drive
and the psu: Corsair 750HX PSU, ATX, EPS12V, Modular, UK Version

ive been saving for quite long now so i took out insurance with the seller for instulation damage, just incase.

another question, is there any pointer or bits of advice for installing everything?

i tested the 5870 in my case today ,fits length wise and it has breathing space on all sides, but thats fited to my old mother board the new one might me slightly different sizes.

 

CPU: 6/10 for gaming, 10/10 for CPU-intensive applications
Motherboard: 10/10
Graphics card: 8/10 (due to Asus brand only)
RAM: 9/10 - lower CAS is better, but quality is fine
PSU: 10/10 (but overkill)

You might be able to use your old HDD without reinstalling, but only if your old PC is very similar to the new one you're building.

 

yeah i know the psu is overkill but i got it for £78 from a friend who works i a computer shop. So why dont you like asus , i liked it because it was just plain with no stupid decals. and the vcore softwear sounds interesting

 

Simply because their quality has been steadily slipping in the last couple of years, plus:

1. The Gigabyte and XFX decals are reasonably tasteful
2. The majority of GPU decals are just peel-off stickers.
3. I don't see the Asus card in stock at any of the best UK sites.

 

scan have not listed them as instock but i orfered one as it cane out and got the secondwave of them to be dispatched , its sitting on my desk next to me just wating til saturday
, and yeah i think asus are a bit slow with there stock or scan is.

I'm thinking you might not be able to just use the old hard drive, because of the driver compatibility issue.

I know this is old, but I just saw it, let us know.

Old chipset drivers conflicting with the new chipset usually means a Blue Screen Of Death before windows loads. This is common to 70-80% of PC upgrades if you use the old hard drive with the new components. Sometimes you get lucky. You're most likely to get away with it if your old motherboard chipset was from the same brand, i.e. in this case you had an Intel chipset (note: chipset and CPU are not the same - your last CPU could have been an intel, but you could have had an intel, nvidia or potentially via or sis chipset)

and i have the asus p5p-le motherboard with a intel core 2 duo 6420 cpu

An HP prebuilt system? Are you not getting a new case as well? I'd be surprised if you'd fit all that lot in an HP/Compaq case (primarily thinking the Power Supply and motherboard here).
It doesn't matter what brand the HDD is. It matters what is on the drive. You can wipe it clean and install the OS again and be absolutely fine, but 'plug and play' with such a major hardware upgrade is iffy.
Fortunately you are going from an intel chipset to an intel chipset, but the 945G is so ancient you may still have problems. Be prepared just in case you do.

 

i allready have a new case a coolermaster centurion 532 i didnt mention that before. lol my 5870 is about as long as the old case . so if i getthis blue screen will the hdd still work in my old system. and will i have to buy a new one hdd for the new comp

 

You will not need to buy a new HDD, but you will need to wipe the other HDD clean first, so you will need somewhere to back your data up to - if you have no suitable means of doing that, then yes, a new hard disk will be required.

 

i can back it up and wipe it but, i dont know where to get windows 7 again as it was a download for the relase candinate

 

Well didn't you keep the .iso? just burn it to a DVD like everybody else did.

 

can you rember what the file wa called ill do a search of my old computer backup

 

also i will need a 64bit os wont i? i downloaded the 32 bit one when i got the rc

 

You won't need one but it's recommended to get one. I'm sure you'd still find the RC available on bit torrent.

 

ive had no luck finding a legit 64bit version out there

 

Then you can either choose to play it a little illegitimate with an RTM version (I can't officially advocate this) or, just use Vista until WIndows 7 is released for real.
