Hey guys, some of you remember me some of you don't but I occasionally post in here with questions . Well, my birthday is the 29th Of September and I bought some ram, http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166818/ these, to be exact. The price when I bought them (yesterday) was £56 (inc vat) , now they are £69! Strange. Anyway, my motherboard can only hold DDR2-1066MHz at max. (1300 O.C. or something like that, but I don't overclock my ram.) So is this good for the price? Although I already bought it. Also, I'm going for a graphics card too, I was thinking of the 4870 1GB but I really need a 1.7GB+ Card. I've never bought Nvidia Cards before in my life, atm I have a 3850. I'm a gamer who likes to set everything to high and play at 60fps+ constant. I don't want to spend more than £150ish on a card, and I only have a Corsair 450w VX, I don't fancy spending £70 to upgrade by 100 watts neither. Any ideas folks? First, you got good ram...but you overpaid. What makes you think you need 1.7GB? You must have a huge screen...like 72 inches or something! You probably would have been better of with a 4890 (available in 2GB version, but again, not necessary)...the 4870 1GB is still a fine card. This is why I buy overkill in power supplies...leaves more options later.
I got the ram today and I'm guessing it was faulty because I bluescreened whenever I tried to run a game and I used a Memory Testing app and it said "it cannot accurately store data on the RAM" (or something along those lines). So instead of getting a replacement, I'm just going to get a refund and put the money towards a PSU and Graphics Card. -EDIT : I haven't actually bought the card yet, but I was looking at the 4870x2's since I'm not buying the ram I have extra money, and I might as well sell my Corsair 450w VX PSU as well. I wanted 1.7GB because of very GPU intensive tasks I'll be doing. Also some games, like Stalker with the Complete 2009 patch, needs around 1.6ish or it will jitter at some parts. Don't worry about it though, I'm just going to get a 1Gb card, probably wait till oct for the DX11 ones to be released.
Not bad memory, a little expensive, but to get decent Corsair stuff it's worth it. You do not need a 1.7GB card, only if you have an nvidia card and use 2560x1600. Any other resolution is fine with 896MB or less. A 1GB card is fine without a 30" monitor. Memory does not affect frame rate, it only prevents massive performance drops if you use a high resolution. As far as I'm aware there are no 4870X2s in the UK, and have not been for over a month as they are discontinued products. Remember, games like Stalker need 1.6GB of RAM, not video card memory.
I wondered why I couldn't find a 4870x2, jeeze . Well if you go into the GTAIV options, as an example, it says "Video Memory Use : 1792MB" etc, what does that mean then? Isn't the VRAM used to buffer all of the objects on the screen, what if you use a game that is very, very highly modded like stalker? Sorry if I'm mistaken, learning is never a bad thing though . Oh...Also...I don't want to get the card and then like 3 months later it be outdated :S. Really, I wanted to get a 4870x2, but the 4890x2's are probably coming out seeing as how the x2's have been recalled (I'm Guessing)
That's because GTA4 is stupid and doesn't compress the textures properly like all other games do. It actually uses less RAM than it says it does, typically 1200MB at 2560x1600, around 900MB at 1920x1200. Just use the config file hack to turn that off. There will never be a 4890X2 as it is technically impossible to create one. The 4870X2s were discontinued to improve availability of the DX11 series ready for launch.
I saw some screens of DX11, I'm not sure if they were real but I thought the screenshots were actually of real life, so that indicates something being done right . I'll just save and wait till christmas, I still can't believe that ram was DoA though...I guess it was a sign to keep that £60 instead of spending it :d
on the gigabyte website for the GA-P35-DS3 board, it says "Speeds Supported: 1066/800 etc", and it says "8GB max" since there is only 4 slots, it must be able to support 2gb sticks :}
I was actually wondering if was DoA because I was surprised too, I did the test and it wasn't the ISO you put on a disk, it was just an app you run and test a certain amount of memory, it failed and it blue screened with a message about memory. I'm actually glad though, because atm I have 2GB 800Mhz, I can still buy the same ram, 2GB Corsair 800MHz (2x1GB) for £30 in the future if I need to upgrade. Is the 800-1066MHz upgrade really that apparent? One thing though, when I took out the new ram sticks and put the old ones in, it didn't boot up properly, so I changed them to the other slots, 2 and 4, and it booted up fine...Strange?
That's not really sufficient, you should be running memtest as a CD outside of the OS to test properly. The fact that the same board works with 2GB modules from other companies suggests it is the RAM at fault, unless you haven't set the voltage high enough (from a previous memory module).
Alright, I tested properly, upped the voltage to the proper, didn't work and still got errors. I'm RMA'ing it and getting a refund . Thanks for the replies btw
