hey guys, i have a HP Pavilion 521c desktop from a friend, it has a Trident Microsystems Cyberblade Video card in it and i wanted to upgrade. how can i tell which is compatible? and what parts run with what? looking into upgrading the whole pc eventually basically using the tower case but with all new parts for everything. just some basic tips on how to know what parts run with what parts etc. i am running Linux Xubuntu. also how to upgrade parts but not lose data. the current motherboard i have on the ram stick slot a clip broke off so im going to buy a new mother board not just for that but for performance. i guess since its running Linux would you guys have any suggestions to what parts would be best to have a faster running desktop? dont wanna spend to much but just a little better performance. i dont feel a whole high performance pc is needed for linux. thanks

Upgrading a computer that old will require a new motherboard, CPU, RAM, power supply(highly recommended), and probably a CPU fan. I think at this point it would be better to build or buy a new computer instead of upgrading an old one.

I would like to ask for your assistance in one problem that's been bugging me for a while.A friend ask me to clean up his system because it was infected with a bunch of viruses, malware ,spyware and so on.Well I got rid of all that stuff, but now (yes.there's a but)the OS doesn't want to start. It logs in and when I put the username and password it says saving settings and it logs off automatically. I already read some threads about corrupted registry. But unfortunetly when i tried to network it with my computer it ask me for the Computer name. This is the tricky part.My friend doesn't remember how he name it.This sounds like i'm trying to hack into someone elses computer but, that's not my idea, neither i have the knwoledge to such thing. When I did the scan of the infected HDD I got the message MAXTOR 5T040H4: Hard disk failure is imminent. Please back up your hard disk and have replaced!
Which I did I bought another HDD, but I can't make the PC to reboot from the OS disk. The new HDD has been formated and partitioned and it's booting from the cable select jumper.
The system keeps giving me the following message:
    Invalid Boot Diskette
    Insert BOOT diskette in A:
But there is not such unit in the system I disable it,because it's burn.
Please, I would gladly appreciate the help and my friend even more.

    Processor Type Intel Pentium III
    Processor Speed 1GHz
    Total memory 384 MB
Booting sequence 1st Boot Device ATAPI CDROM
    2nD Boot Device IDE-HDD
    3rd Boot Device Disable
    IDE Drive Configuration
    Primary Master IDE 1st IDE
    Primary Salve IDE 2nd IDE
    Secondary Master IDE 3rd IDE
    Secondary Slave IDE 4th IDE
So, how do I intall the OS in the new HDD or how do i enter to the old HDD to see the computer name?
I'm able to access the old HDD thru my pc as and new disk!
    Thank You!
