Is it possible to SSH my iphone 3gs which as on an O2 monthly contract in the UK which includes 3G internet. Will this affect my payment methods or any other fimware/software or internet in terms of bricking it if I install the SSH and put apps on there?

Your first step is to jailbreak your phone. If you do that successfully SSHing cannot brick it unless you do something very stupid. Look up SShing somewhere like google or youtube. If you want to install apps i recommend downloading from "www.apptrackr.org" and then download "appsync" from cydia. Then drag the ".ipa" into itunes and sync like you normally would. That is the easiest way to install cracked apps into a jailbroken iphone. Good Luck
