android with no sim card

I have an HTC hero Android phone with cell south, which has no sim card. I have an at&t blackberry which I want to unlock to use as a backup on cell south. Once unlocked I would simply swap sim cards to the bb. But how does this work with no sim? Is it possible for me to run my bb on cell south? Could someone give me some advice or point me in the right direction? Many thanks!
