Just wondering why the Eris was never given OS updates to Froyo or higher. I used to have a HTC Windows phone and it also blocked the windows updates.

If you're interested in actually updating your OS, then do some proper reading here. Phone manufacturers often cite hardware as a limiting factor when they don't provide updates which is not technically the case more often than not. You wouldn't really be inclined to upgrade your phone model otherwise, would you?

Yes you are right about the upgrades. However, I'm referring to the limited updates by manufacturers. I have the Motorola Droid which is running gingerbread while my wife has the HTC Eris which is still on 2.1. I know they do it purposefully, but is there a possible way to bypass that in order to get the latest and greatest. The biggest turn off to upgrading to starting a new contract.
