Which version does the player require (you can drag one that works into MediaInfo to find out which version of the codec it's using) - although I'm surprised that that would be the problem.
Once you know the version you need, you would uninstall the current version and install the old version.
Run VirtualDub and load/drag the video into it.
Select Video > Compression and choose the XviD codec then save the file.
