As far as I know M4V files are basically MP4 files with the ability to support DRM, although I don't think M4V supports AC3 audio as MP4 does.
While I'm not sure why you'd want to convert an MP4 to M4V, have you tried simply changing the file extension from MP4 to M4V? If an M4V file is not supported by a player, changing it's extension to MP4 usually works as long as it doesn't contain DRM, so it may work the other way around.

It's Apple's proprietary MPEG-4 Video format. Why the need to convert to .m4v anyway? There's no advantage to it over .mp4. If you're trying to get .mp4 to play on an Apple device, then you need to make sure it's .mp4 & AAC audio.

Hi all sorry about the lack of replies!? Yeh I've had some success with short films/short file size being converted to mp4 which plays fine on my Sony Experia phone via the MxPlayer App - nothing else seems to work - but longer films with a larger file size seems prone to sound drop-out and the picture freezing and slowing down!!? If I lower the output quality of larger films (say a 2 hour films) to anywhere round the 500mb-700mb mark to picture is also prone to pixelation!!!?!?
