Matroska question

By a fluke the other day I just happened to find the same video file in two different format. Matroska and AVI. The friend that gave it to me said it was originally encoded with Matroska. The AVI was just cut from a video conversion program from Matroska to AVI. In my opinion the Matroska video quality was way better. Is that the way it's supposed to be?

Also do you know of a program, possibly similar to VirtualDub but for Matroska. One that I could edit video on?

Thank you
