Hi all,
I recently went out and bought myself a shiny new 320GB PS3 Slim. I keep all of my videos on my 1TB Western Digital Elements external HDD, and was hopingto use it to watch videos on the PS3. Id previously used the drive to watch videos on my Xbox 360, so its already formatted (one big 1TB partition) to FAT32.
I expected thisd be fine, as it works without issue on my Xbox. After hearing that the PS3 was a better media player than the 360, I was shocked that this wouldnt work! Heres what happens:
1. Plug the drive into the PS3
2. Wait for detection
3. Find the drive under the videos menu (labelled "USB Device (Elements 1023))
4. Hit triangle and go to "Display All"
5. Scroll through two or three folders (if that), and then the drive apparently gets disconnected
Is this a common problem? Ive tried searching around but to no avail - Ive mainly seen people saying that theyve managed to get this working fine!

Hmm, well first thing to say is make sure the connections are in properly.
Second the ps3 doesnt have a great media player, sony were too cheap to pay for the use of many popular codecs and so retail firmware consoles dont play half the files most people have.
On cfw though we now have showtime player, which also comes with multiman now, which does support more codecs but not 100% compatible with some.
Never heard of this disconnection problem before, has you tried connecting it to the other usb port and see if the same happens on that one?

In my oppinion the Xbox 360's media player is better, it recognizes files faster and is easier to handle. On the other hand the PS3 has a BluRay drive.
Xbox 360: On my fourth console, first one rrod 3 times, second one sold at ebay because of no HDMI, third one rrod during flashing (supposedly killed that drive), fourth one up and working on LT 3.0
PSP: Slim&Lite 2004 model with 6,60 ME v1.3
PS3: 60 Gig Model with the latest official firmware for going online and a modified case for better cooling
PSVita: Need some games for it, just bought an 8 GB memory card at ebay, awaiting a Photofast addapter for MicroSD-cards.
