uTorrent remains top BitTorrent client

article published on 15 August, 2009

In June we reported that small BitTorrent client uTorrent was far and away the most popular client and the numbers remain the same two months later, according to TorrentFreak. BitComet continues to lose market share, which is easily eaten up by front runners uTorrent and Vuze. The data comes from over 165,000 unique users and is collected by the Tribler team from Delft University of Technology. ... [ read the full article ]

Yeah I used to use Azureus but then they came out with that Vuze content and then it became unappealing. It seemed as thought they tried to turn it into a youtube.

just turn that stuff off.. and please carry on using your macromedia owned torrent program.. wonder why people get caught?.. I don't.

closed source apps with suspect outgoing connections to a known copy protection software company.. hmmm.. something smells bad here. I ban all incoming and outgoing connections to macrovisiontorrent clients.. I won't have you connect to my nice secure open source program thanks.

Yeah, newest official bittorrent clients are based on uTorrent code. I haven't actually used the official so I don't know how much it looks like uTorrent.

The old BT client was a mess with a horrible GUI and few options. Utorrent is one of the few BTC's with a nice and easy to use GUI.

Indeed. I am a not-insignificant downloader and have been for some years. No paranoia has arrived thru my letterbox yet. Doesn't mean it won't but it hasn't yet.. and my earliest years at downloading half of the known internet where done before i even heard of IP lists and the like.. ..and i've been using UTorrent 1.8.2 for the longest time too. Will continue to do so until such time i ever get a letter :)

I was downloading the old 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' BBC TV series with Bitcomet & noticed that my Listening Port was blocked so only about 4 kbs !!! After hours of playing with my Router/Firewall i read a post saying simply use Utorrent coz it automatically configs everything so i got it & you know what ? same torrent 100 times faster ! That's right 100 ! 450kbs on average to be precise . So that is the difference mate - enjoy .

I use 1.6.1 as well. That was the last build before they sold out to the original creator of bittorrent and got all closed about their source code and such.

ammad123, in a previous artical about the same thing they lumped the two together as essentially one. They are the same.

They appear to be the most resistant to 'spider bites'. Bitcommet was the most gullable. The frog was inbetween. I call the apps that tap into DHT and other nets to get IP addresses then try to get in to your computer and or create mischief, spiders. Their first trick was to fool the system into thinking something at 99% was done. BC went for the bait way too often a year or more back. Fortunatly, ut and bt could finish the job. That was enough for me.

I use BitComet because I can preview video downloads at 10 to 20% of the download. Can the top 3 do previews?

OK, good to know. I just tried viewing a download in progress (approx 50%) with VLC. It first notified me that the file was "broken" and offered to try fix it. Then played the file for a little while before jamming. BitComet uses MPC and you can preview directly from the app. It also tries to download the first 5% of the file in higher priority for you then offers the "preview" funtionality.
To each his own.

uTorrrent is one of the best, I've been using it for years.

Azureus- tried it but it was a rescource hog - that may have changed.

BitComet - banned from most private trackers - I wonder why?

Bram Choen is the original developer of bit torrent and all his open source is used by every other client going.

Unless of course you know different.

Just an interesting footnote to this...

A mate of mine has found that his ISP - Exetel in Australia - is choking his torrents. He has written to me just now that he is getting "some great speed" from switching over to Bitlord... perhaps it fits into that 'unknown' class on the table rather than 'other'.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

Bitcommet does not relyably measure upload and down load info. None do but BC is by far the worst offender. It can be off by way more than 25%. I have seen it off several 100%. Nothing is happening but it says at the bottom you are doing double digit traffic. If you are interested in realistic ratios you can't use BC. Their falure to do things right when they had the reasorces has really hurt them. As persons reduce their use of public trackers to try to avoid all the attention, BC users will be forced to change.

Torrents is just too good a concept to last forever, so get it for free while you can.
