I don't understand. Why is it that most downloads are 640 x 272 or close to that size in the xvid format? This is pretty small.
When I rip my own widescreen DVD's I rip them to at least 720x405 or 720x368 if the movie is 2.35:1 aspect ratio. I also rip them to MP4 using H.264 encoding. The file size is generally the same, but the quality is superior. They look great on my 1920x1200px LCD. That's just using handbrake.
So why do most downloads still come in this antiquated size? And why Xvid? Why isn't everything Mp4 H.264 these days?

they use xvid for compatibility. Xvid works with almost every software. H264 while superior requires more powerful cpu to decode.
When I convert videos to avi, I just use the default size that my converter chooses. Most people stick to an aspect ratio that is divisable by 8 (also my choice), this will provide a video that can be use in a fullscreen mode without the blackbars.
