saw some pretty bad stuff said about the Haali Media Splitter ....
    see here
Ive been scouring the internet looking for a solution as to why or how can i get back my video files thumbnail previews....
i saw that this might be an option but dont know if its worth the trouble if it really is as bad as these guys said in their comments.
another thing that ive been thinking about doing is just installing the latest K-Lite Codec Packto see if that works.

Any suggestions or opinions on the tools mentioned above to help get back thumbnail previews are super welcomed.
    Please note:
i have checked and unchecked folder views and rechecked just about every setting imaginable. everything seems to be as it should be to allow the thumbs but theyre gone.
    scenario:
i open a folder full of video files all i see is the windows avi file icon - where once you could actually see a scene from the movie and knew right away what movie it was.

During the install it asks you if you want to install the shell
extension. Don't select it, and this problem will not occur.

On my box, I installed Haali individually, followed by FFDshow.
    Give it a try.
