hi all - was hoping to hear it straight of the AD Squad....
what is the difference between all the different file formats :
    divx, xvid, x264, MP4, MPEG 1, MPEG 2, MKV, etc.,etc...

im planning on filling up a hard drive sometime in the near future BUT i wanna make sure that once i convert that i havent sacrificed too much quality. are any of the formats that i mentioned considered old school / obsolete ? should i be focusing on one type in particular that definately allows retention of quality ?
i know i can just google any one and read on but i want to hear it straight and not have to re-invent the wheel.
thanks all AS WALWAYS for any help / tips.

It really depends where you are starting from.. for dvd there is no point using any higher than mpeg2 .. because that's what they are on the disk.. there is totally no point encoding youtube flv's in x264... or dvd rips for that matter. I would just leave the files in the closest format to what they start as.
