avi clip only plays if i have my media player on a smaller size....very weird

when i play an avi, initially the video source doesnt come up(the audio does though) but when i resized my windows media player(i shrunk it down to a very small size) then the video shows up. So for me to watch the clip, i pretty much have to watch it on a screen size of roughly 3 inches by 3 inches. any media player screen bigger than that and the video souce blacks out. I have various codec packs(k-lite, cccp, etc and im running on a vista os)Any ideas on how to fix this. Its not like this with all my clips either.
