Get the following message for movies purchased in Europe:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because the disc prohibits playback in your region of the world. You must obtain a disc that is intended for your geographic region."

Is there a workaround for this?

Yes, rip the movie to your hard drive, using DVDFab. Then you can watch it on your computer, or burn it to a DVD and watch it on your standalone player.
You can first try VLC , I am not sure if it stupid about region codes or not...
