    Hi,

I've noticed during playback of some .avi files with Divx dvd player, that pixelation occurs during dark scenes. Normally lit scenes are fine, I just notice pixelation in the darker scenes.

    Questions:
1.Why would pixelation only occur during the dark scenes?
2.If pixelation is due to the video source, how do I check the quality of .avi files?
3.Does a slower burn speed reduce the risk of pixelation?

    Thanks.

Pixelation is more noticeable in the dark area because the compressor devoted more resources to the parts of the scene where more complex action was taking place.
As a general observation, if the original material was a DVD movie, then using a higher bitrate or using more passes would result in a higher quality avi - but then the file would be larger.
The pixelation that is intrinsic to the compression process is not affected by burning speed.
