I searched and couldn't find a post that fit my question...

How do I rip and burn a movie that has automatic subtitles? For example, when backing up The Da Vinci Code, I initially backed up w/o subtitles, and was subsequently screwed. Then I backed up with subtitles, but when playing, on a stand alone player, had to manually toggle the subtitle on/off when a foreign language was spoken (for me, that's any language that isn't American-English). I would like for the dvd to only show subtitles when a foreign language is spoken (obviously I am only expecting this if the original dvd did the same).

Here's what I am currently using:

    DVD Shrink 3.2
    AnyDVD 6.5.4.9
    ImgBurn 2.4.3.0

Occasionally, I use DVD Fab HD Decrypter and FixVTS.

Thanks for any and all help. Please forgive me if I made any posting errors.

Ripping the movie and shrinking should normally include any subtitles (unless a subtitle was deselected).

(DVD Shrink has a setting under 'Preferences' > 'Hide subpictures of insignificant size' which should be unchecked).

If the files are backed up to a folder, the movie can be opened in DVDSubEdit and the 'Forced' or 'Normal' setting can be checked and changed if required.

Before making the changes permanent, be aware that they cannot be undone - you might consider using a backup file to test.

    Run DVDSubEdit:
'File' > 'Open full Domain' and select the first VOB of the main Title (normally VTS_01_1.VOB)

1 On the top right, select a subtitle stream (typically there are WS and a LB versions).

    2 Step through the subs

3 Check if they are Forced or Normal

If they are Normal and you wish to change to Forced, change setting (3) then click on 'Edit' and 'Apply last modification to all'.

All of the subs in that particular stream will be Forced.

    Repeat for the LB version.

Click 'File' > 'Save all modifications' and note the warning message.

The initial set-up of the DVD player includes a language setting for subtitles.
If this setting is English and it sees a 'Forced' sub, it will be displayed on the screen - even if you haven't turned the subs 'on' with the remote.

Thanks a lot. I'll give it a try when I get home.

If you run it through DVD Shrink in reauthor mode you can right click and choose 'Set Default Streams', then tick 'Display the following subpicture stream'. Save it uncompressed (if it already is). The subs will come up now without a button press (but they can be turned off).
