Hi all There is so much information available that I think I may be getting bogged down. I have downloaded a movie which has avi extension. I want to put this onto a DVD+R I have used DVD flick to convert and burn to disc but the quality is not very good. I already have a couple of other programs on my PC-Power producer,NTI CD & DVD maker,Roxio Creator 9.1.Are any of these programs able to convert the file? I can't seem to get an understanding of this and the more that I read about the subject makes me more confused. Thanks
How is the quality of the file before you converted it? If it's poor, there isn't much you can do, except look for a better file to work with. Also, are you multi-tasking while converting the files?

The quality of the filewasn't very good to start with.I have a much better one now which I am waiting to convert I just wanted to make sure that I was going about it the right way. I am also multi tasking while converting the files.Is it best to leave the PC to get on with it? Just one other question if my DVD RW is a "plus" RW does this mean I can only use DVD+R/RW discs to write to? Thanks
Multi tasking can slow down your system, making the program work harder, causing longer conversion times and can also affect quality. Your should be able to use about any type of disk with your dvd burner. I use +R's as well as -R's. I burn my disks at between 8x-10x.
If you want to convert your avi files to DVD, you could also use ConvertxtoDVD (payware). I always use MPEG Video Wizard DVD (payware) to create DVD, as far as I know, it will not degrade your file quality. I don't know if DVD flick can maximize the quality preservation. Multi tasking is not good, it'll slow down your computer and postpone the conversion time. For your reference.
Thanks. I used DVD flick to convert and the quality wasn't too bad(a bit jerky). 20 minutes into the film and it stopped and went back to the beginning.Tried fast forwarding and the same happened again. Back to the drawing board. BTW I left the PC well alone whilst conversion was going on
I think I might know where I went wrong. I had already started to encode the film using another freeware program which seemed to be taking forever so I stopped it mid cycle. When i tried to play the film on the PC using VLC the file was broken. I have however now copied it on to DVD disc using DVD flick and it took 2hrs 30 mins all in all. The quality was good for the first hour of the film and then the audio/mouths went out of sync. I think that this might have been caused by my antivirus program commencing its daily scehduled scan( another lesson learnt)whilst encoding was going on I am quite pleased overall and am now thinking is it worth purchasing a program and if so wondered if there is anything anybody could recommend.Are the other programs a lot quicker? Or is it worth just sticking with DVD flick
I use ConvertX2Dvd which does a good job for me. Dvd Flick would take an hour or more to do a movie, ConvertX2Dvd takes maybe 45 minutes at the most, most taking within 30 minutes. Its ease of use is comparable to dvd flick, and I have multi-tasked while using it, and barely added a few minutes to process, and didn't see any problems when I watched the film.
Do you have to use the trial version initially with the watermark or can you just purchase the full version and is it a one off payment? Thanks
You can purchase directly from their site, which is what I did. As far as I can tell, it's a 1 time payment. Try it out first to see if you like it first.
It does have a watermark (I believe it says ConvertXtoDvd), but you will be able to see the quality of the conversion and see if you want to purchase it.
I would try to use a Divx-capable payer, if possible. Failing that, I would also suggest ConvertXToDVD -- an excellent all-in-one tool (unusually good!)
Thinking of purchasing this one now Xilisoft AVI to DVD Converter .Just wondered if it is as good as convertx to dvd
No it wasn't recommended by any of the posters. I have actually purchased convertxtodvd and am very pleased with the results
