If your standalone DVD player is DivX certified, you can burn the AVI files to a CD or DVD as data - they should then play on a certified machine (if they meet the other requirements for resolution, etc).

Is 'imgburner' the same as the burning program 'ImgBurn' - if so, it merely burns disks - it will not create a DVD image from an avi file.

The limiting factor for converting AVI to DVD Movie format is the running time of the video.
A standard DVD blank can hold between two to four hours running time in DVD Movie Format - it's because the relatively small AVI files become much larger in the different format.

A good, free program to convert AVI to movie format is DVD Flick - it will optionally burn the disk.
