hi there gang! i REALLY REALLY would like to learn more about what DVD player i can invest in that will allow me to play video files (that ive downloaded OR that ive created w/ handbrake) right out of the box. ive seen a few comments made about dvd players being able to play video files WITHOUT having to convert to dvd. all this time - anything ive downloaded or backed up - i convert back to DVD when i want to watch it. any and all suggestions are welcome and as always MUCH appreciated! thanks all.
I think you have heard about dvd players that are divx compatible. Just look for the divx symbol on the box. For other formats you'll have to read the labels to see what they are compatible with. I find that divx compatibility is usually enough, especially with downloaded content. Some players even support flash drives. I currently make due with dvd-rw.
yes - youre right on point - i do indeed recall that term used ("divx")..... i would like to invest in one but i dont know where to start. do you have any suggestions (any makes /models in particular) also - will it play the files that ive backed up w/ handbrake (mkv's / mp4's)? and do i simply copy them onto the disc and thats it ? thanks so much for chiming in.
I don't really have any recommendations for specific players. I've never been picky about picture quality. It plays, I can see and hear it and I'm good to go. Divx will basically play .avi files. I don't know if the newest dvd players will support mkv as part of divx because divx not to long ago started to support the format. I haven't seen any dvd players that support mkv or mp4 but that does mean they aren't out there. For playback all you need to do is burn it to a disc. When I do it I have Nero so I select to burn a data disc and it has always worked. My dvd player it even picks up subtitle files (they would be burnt as is along with the video file).
Depends on how much you want to spend...you can go all the way with a Popcorn Hour, or just get a WD TV Live, which will play about any video format(not discs though). If you want a player that will play discs too, the options are pretty limited, pretty much Divx available, no MKV/mp4. http://www.wdtvlive.com/
