Go to Control panel, click on 'Sounds and Audio Devices', make sure that the 'Place volume icon in the task bar' is checked.

The place volume icon in task bar' is checked. I can play music, but all Windows sounds are not woking. IE. Start up Shut down, and when I log on to my ISP, AOL no wellcome sound, and no goodby when I log off, and no email sound. Very strange.
