Yea you can It takes longer than trasferring it from your computer because it has to turn it into the file so it can read it but if you want to do it from your PS2 yes it should work

It takes about the same time, lol.
Providing you have a modded PS2, you can get HDLoader or HDAdvance discs and on the main screen there is a 'Convert' button. You can simply put in a legit PS2 game of your choice (if it's burned you'll have to insert it via like a flip top or slide card and NOT press eject), put in a name for your game and then the HD program of your choice will do the work.

From then on, you can play your games from your hard drive no sweat!

my cousin doesnt have a modded PS2 and he can put games on the HDD with the disk. Also when I said it would take longer I was talking about slower than hooking the HDD to the Computer I think it was quicker, but you might be right we haven't put a game on through the cd in a long while

I'm pretty sure they do sell a retail version that the PS2 can read with no hassle, kind of like swap magic discs. It's just much less of a hassle to do something simple like install a memory card exploit then DOWNLOAD a copy of HDLoader.

The FMCB exploit install is super-easy, easier than opening the case, let alone soldering to the board.
