sat is your only choice after N3 untill a fix or new box is released that will cope with N3, this could be years.

Do some research and you will have a sat setup in no time before the switch

    Hi

Quick message for mikah or any other senior pro`s on here.

Ive been following the thread for quite a while and am looking for info regarding birmingham. I see it is mainly NTL Areas that are going down and receiv ing new cards and no telewest areas of yet.

Just wondering if the telewest receivers we have will be appropriate or will they have to update those as well for us in TW area?

Also another bit of into if you can help. Im thinking of getting a STARVIEW HD COMBO as i have a motorised dish and wondered if you can do card share with these receivers as you do with the starview 6?

I would be interested in both sat and cable card share between boxes in my home.

Thanks in advance and if you have any links to a current library such as eamos old i would appreciate it

I have read this thread with interest. Some comments have made me smile.

There a couple of things I would like to point out. VOD services are provided to people who want/need the system to be plug and play. They are mostly non technical users, therefore the service needs to be a black-box solution. Nagaravision is a company that provide Content providers the ability to encrypt their data stream at the source (their datacenters) which requires a device at the remote location (your home) to un-encrypt the data stream so that you can watch the content on your TV.

It needs to be a simple solution in order for this black-box approach

In its simplest forms, encryption is a door lock. If you want to open the door, you need a key. The same goes for Nagravision. In order to unlock the encryption you need the key.

Nagravision are realistic in their approach. They "Know" their keys will be comprimised and they do the same as you would do if you lost your door key, you have to change the lock, which means the old key wont work and you need to use the new key. This is why they have built their service around a "Dynamic" solution.

Every now and then, they actually change the "type" of lock they use and not just the key you need to open it. This is what is happening currently and is what the term Nagra 3 is actually referring to. They are changing the type of lock.

Ok, so what does that mean for you?

Well, firstly, lets look at how official users will be getting the new Nagra 3 service. They are getting a new card, however their set-top boxes are not being replaced. This means that the existing boxes can recieve Nagra 3 and the changes to the set-top box is purely a software change/modification. There would be no reason therefore to suggest that un-official set-top boxes that can currently recieve the Nagra 2 service would require anything more than the same change/modification.

It is possible and more likely probable, that the new cards being sent out not only contain the key, but also software that works in conjunction with the set-top box software. This could facilitate the inclusion
of some sort of rolling keychange, where the lock changes every few minutes, making set-top boxes that require manual key input to work, pretty much defunct. This is the Industry standard method for systems requireing authenticated access now, therefore it would be reasonable to assume that Nagravision have at least investigated this route and would certainaly have this on their roadmap.

However, whatever their new approach I will say this. Nagra 3 will lead to Nagra 4 and beyond. Why? Because no system is hackproof. Indeed as I said earlier, Nagravision "expect" their systems to be hacked and why their main selling point is their Dynamic approach and ability to change.

    So why no fix yet?

I would think there probably is, but the scene wont release it until a greater percentage of systems have been switched over, purely for the reason that it wouldnt be too late for Nagra to get the scene code, reverse engineer it and patch their own code to make the scene release defunct.

This will be harder to do once Nagra 3 if fully up and running, not without great expense.

So my suggestion is to wait and see. Don't jump ship just yet. There are a fantastic group of very intelligent guys out there that do this stuff for nothing more that the Kudos of being able to say nah, nah nah, nah nah nah.
