DVD DL discs and nec dvd rw nd-3500ag

I have a nec dvd rw nd-3500ag disc drive. Is it possible to burn Double layer (8.5gig) DVDs with this drive. If its any help - the 'firmware' is no.2.9 and I'm told I have the most up to date driver. I have tried b urning with Nero 9 and Imgburn, and a straight disc 'copy' using Windows (XP). I've Googled various websites but can't make sense of any of them and the NEC website is totally useless!

yes it will.. but they are VERY picky about d/l media.. only verbs work reliably. BTW.. that isn't the best firmware.. 1Y5 is better.. liggy & dee on cdfreaks supply it.

I crossflashed my old 3500 with the 3550 1Y5 .. but don't know if it's possible with windoze.
Burner is getting on a bit.. may not be up to d/l burns any more.
